Boil 3 cups of water and steep 5-6 sprigs (sprig = 6 " long) for 15 minutes or longer.
Remove mint.
Add and stir 1/3 cup of sugar until dissolved.
The resulting concentrate may be cooled or even frozen for later.
Comine 2 cups orange juice and 1/2 Cup lemon juice. Add mint concetrate plus water and ice to fill a 1/2 gallon pitcher. Chill.
Mint juleps are traditionally made one at a time, crushing the mint in a silver julep cup. We've adapted the recipe to make a large batch.
Stir together bourbon and 4 teaspoons sugar until sugar is dissolved. Lightly crush mint leaves with remaining 4 teaspoons sugar in a metal bowl with back of a spoon until sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes. Add 4 cups crushed ice, then add 3/4 cup bourbon mixture and stir well.
Divide mixture among 8 (12-ounce) glasses with a ladle. Add enough of remaining 8 cups ice to almost fill glasses, then add remaining 3/4 cup bourbon and stir well.
